Thursday polling fun

13 Sep 2007 02:39 pm

I'm experimenting with polls from Polldaddy, so I thought I'd take a not-so-random sample of the political leanings of my readers.

Update Obviously, I am not nearly as funny as I think I am. References to Mark Warner removed.

Comments (95)

Um...are you aware that the race Warner has entered is...Virginia Senate? He gave up on the Presidency ages ago...

Obviously, I am not nearly as funny as I think I am.

On the Democratic side, you left out Biden, Dodd, Gravel and Kucinich.

On the Republican side, you left out Hunter and Tancredo.

So, you listed six Republican and four Democratic presidential candidates, one does-not-compute (Warner) and "other."

Skew results much?

I'll put money on Ron Paul magically garnering some 30,000 votes in the next few hours.

Shame on you Megan. It should be *whom* would you elect president.

Steve,

A lot of us here from Megan's old site are small "L" libertarians, not members of the Libertarian Party, and thus vote for whomever we think will promote freedom, access to (relatively) free markets, not rely overmuch on government to provide what we should be providing for ourselves, etc. etc.

So I don't think you will see the landslide of votes for Ron Paul that you expect.

Those of you making snarky comments keep coming back to this site, so she must be doing something right. After all, that's what The Atlantic wants.

"Those of you making snarky comments keep coming back to this site, so she must be doing something right. After all, that's what The Atlantic wants."

Absolutely, because I always click on every ad, and I always buy something.

Well, Rex, given that Foghorn Leghorn is getting the most votes for an R candidate here, I am definitely re-evaluating why I bother to read the comments....

Where's Brownback? Or has he dropped out?

You're much funnier than you think you are.

Any word on an Al Gore run? I know he has said no but man this country needs a grown up. Oh wait, the public thinks he is "boring". Nevermind, Guiliani it is.

As a Coloradan I've got to say, the 3 people who have chosen Tom Tancredo are out of their freaking gourds. The man is obviously a lunatic, I don't know how anyone could not see it unless they, themselves, were also lunatics.

How could the Warner thing possibly be a joke? Bizarre.

Rex said:

I don't think he was referring to that. Ron Paul supporters have an eerie ability to appear out of the eather, vote en mass on a internet pole and then are re-absorbed. It's spooky.
;)

Those of you making snarky comments keep coming back to this site, so she must be doing something right. After all, that's what The Atlantic wants.

Those are incredibly low standards. I sure hope she can live up to them.

i might be a bit late but can I vote for Mark Warner?

Those of you making snarky comments keep coming back to this site, so she must be doing something right. After all, that's what The Atlantic wants.
yes... yes she is "doing it" right. Her information is certainly asymmetrical

This comment will be deleted for rampant trolling.

This comment has been deleted because "I hate you" is not a very productive line of inquiry.

This comment has been deleted for profanity.

I think the most practical way to accomplish libertarian political objectives in the short term is to support divided government. Since the Dems can't realistically lose either house in '08, and have a real shot at a 60 vote plurality in the Senate, I have no choice but to vote R for president in 2008. With Hagel out, Paul is the only R I can tolerate, but suffers from that niggling detail of being completely unelectable. He has my support, I picked him in your poll, I'll send him money, I have even announced on my blog that I will be changing my x-underwear-x party affiliation so I can vote for him in the primaries.

No illusions though. He can't win, so I will have to vote for whatever piece of shit the Republicans eventually nominate. And I mean that sincerely. Regardless of who it is, the R executive and D legislature will keep in each other in check. Even if I strongly prefer the Dem candidate, an all Dem single party government with a 60 vote plurality in the Senate will be every bit as corrupt and damaging to freedom as the single party Republican government was the last six years. Just different lobbyists.

I have to go throw up now.

Deleting comments is a great way to keep a site neat and tidy, and it's something that the top bloggers engage in so their readers don't have to deal with unpleasant thoughts. Kevin Drum's site even edits comments without noting they were edited. So, Megan has a ways to go before reaching his high level.

As for the poll's original exclusion of Tancredo, that's a good idea too. After all, as president he wouldn't let things like this happen.

I imagine that the Atlantic is delighted that half the comments on Ms. McArdle's blog have been deleted for "rampant trolling".

To be fair to Ms. McArdle, this is the same problem that Twain had when the Atlantic published his material in the late 19th century. People just don't get the subtleties of your jokes, do they Ms. McArdle? Take solace in knowing that you're in the company of Longfellow, Emily Dickinson, and Julia Ward Howe. Unlike you, your detractors aren't the equal of those giants.

What the fuck is rampant trolling?

I think it means looking for bisymmetrical sex with Megan McCardle-lookalikes under the 23rd Street on-ramp in East Bot-Fux Indiana!

“And how fucking dare anyone out there make fun of Megan! After all she's been through! Leave Megan alone! She’s just trying to write her column! She’s a human being! What you don’t realize is Megan’s making you all this snark, and all you do write a bunch of crap about her! Her column is called Asymmetical Information for a reason, but all you lopsided people want is more more more! (Sobs) LEAVE HER ALONE!”

g, I can't stop laughing at that!

I'm deleting my own comment for rampant trolling.

Have you ever considered Teresa Nielsen Hayden's method of "disemvowling" for your undesired comments? I found this post randomly and the comment thread is just... stunning. I've honestly never seen anything like it before.

This comment has been pre-empted for rampant trolling.

Wait, you're telling me this isn't a parody site?

I can has deleted comment pls? KTHANXBYE!

Of course it's a parody site. Why else would she be deleting comments like these?

Wow, I've never seen the comment section of a blog so heavily edited. This thing reads like a redacted report from the Pentagon.

With skin that thin, do you have to live in a hermetically-sealed bubble?

Wow, I've never seen the comment section of a blog so heavily edited. This thing reads like a redacted report from the Panda-gon.

See Also: the comments at "The Daily Cooze", "LiarDogFake", and/or "Looks and Criers"...

Uh, just kidding above, that was me being meta, but if I get deleted now it won't really make any sense. My work is done!

Does Megan know what "rampant" means?

rampant:
1. Unrestrained and violent
2. Rearing on left hind leg with forelegs elevated and head usually in profile
3. (of a plant) having a lush and unchecked growth

Giving her the benefit of the doubt I choose to believe that she meant #3. So you see, Megan is a gardener. "Oh my! What lush trolls you have Megan!"

See? See?

Proudly posted beneath the flag: Troll, rampant, on a blazant chequy with gules escartelly triumphant over six-fooot-two dingbat faux-libertarian courant.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I also voted for Biden like 20 times, because it just wasn't right for him be outpolled by McCain. Interesting how the widget moves the candidates around on every refresh to defeat the rampant polling bots.

BTW - I hope it is ok to comment on the poll instead of the rampant deletions. I know its off topic, but I had to get my rampant ballot stuffing off my conscience.

"Obviously, I am not nearly as funny as I think I am."

I disagree, mon petit chou. You are far funnier than you know.

This comment has been deleted because "I hate you" is not a productive line of inquiry.

Yow,

This comment thread reminds me of the D-Day scene in Private Ryan.

A good cause, those comments won't be forgotten!

This comment has been deleted because "I hate you" is not a very productive line of inquiry. Also, there is something madly wrong with the commenter's system of punctuation, which seems to deploy back slashes in rather surprising ways.

Wow. Engage in much censorship? Even better, I am bettin' you don't even know the correct definition of troll. Here is a hint, it is NOT people who disagree with your stupidity.

Am I missing a joke, because she just put up a poll right? Why all the angry comments?

By the way, the high numbers for Obama and Gravel merely prove that Megan has an uphill battle here. Bon chance!

This comment has been deleted because "I hate you", or its many variants, are not productive lines of inquiry.

Sigh. Yes, this comment has been deleted again. Hint: wild and bizarre accusations are likely to be judged unproductive, as are implied threats that the world will find me out, no matter how many times you repost them. Thanks.

In case people missed Megan's original poll and all her errors...hey Megan, where did the poll go? Was that a typo, or a joke?

Here's a link to a screenshot of it:

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/678/thursdaytrollingfunyg0.png

She'll delete it. Read www.sadlyno.com or www.firemeganmcardle.blogspot.com for more.

Megan would never engage in censorship! Never ever!

She's even said so, right here:

http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/7101.html#comment-271930

She'd also never ever be a hypocrite or just delete comments that make her look bad.

http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/7101.html#comment-272440

Or that made her feel stupid

http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/7101.html

Megan only deletes comments that are vicious personal insults and drag down the discussion. I think that's well established.

Wow, you really don't get it do you? For the record, saying you have thin skin (which is true) is not the same as saying I hate you (which is not true)

But then again this isn't surprising coming from you.

So ya'll are pissed that she made a joke about Mark Warner, and then changed the poll when confused readers got angry?

That's it?

Megan made a funny. It was a super awesome very funny joke. I'm sure leaving some other actual presidential candidates off her poll while including Warner was all part of the super clever awesomeness of the joke about leaving Warner in. Ha. Ha.

I'm very sure that her freakout and rampant deletion of comments is all part of that joke. When she edits those comments and lies about them that's also part of the joke. Don't you get it?

Or could it be that she's ashamed? Nah. It's just Philistines not getting her cleverness. There's nothing at all to see here. That's why she's deleting comments. They're all just too silly and too hateful for her to let others read them. It really takes a libertarian to exert that fine and keen sense of discretion. I'd only trust a libertarian to delete comments and edit links and erase trackbacks. I just know that a libertarian really holds free speech dear.

Nope, nothing to worry about. Move along, move along.

My skin is all red from rampant towelling.

"To be fair to Ms. McArdle, this is the same problem that Twain had when the Atlantic published his material in the late 19th century. This comment was not deleted... she wouldn't delete her own posts.

Let's try this again, with a less offensive name, and see how quickly it gets deleted.

The Atlantic should be deleted for rampant idiocy. Alas, we will have to wait for Twain to rise from the grave and shoot David Bradley in the face for ruining what was once a great literary magazine with the likes of Asshat and McCracker.

This comment was deleted because Ms. McArdle is pretty...her mummy says so, so it's true.

I think it would be better if you could have the poll results sorted?

Being a libertarian means not being shackled by the rules of grammar.

This comment was deleted because its author possess the insight of a 5th grader, making Megan jealous.

This comment deleted for trampant rolling.

This comment deleted for improper use of italics.

This comment has been deleted because Megan McArdle is a rampant censor and doesn't believe in any kind of debate.

I will not be deleted. Never!

Now, I'm gonna go click on some ad links and buy me some stuff, because those free markets won't manage themselves, people.

Seymour Crax / I.P. Daily in 2008!

This comment has been deleted because ... dammit ... because! I can't believe you people are being so mean to Megan! You're lucky she ever blogged for you! If you want to snark, you'll have to snark through me!

Damn. I see the joke had been done already. Late again.

But anyway ... I've never seen a libertine who has such a fascination with telling other people to shut up!

Well, not since Bill 0.

This comment has been pre-emptively deleted because we must not allow the smoking McArdle to be a mushroom cloud.

This comment is being deleted because the commenter's obvious intent is to ridicule the deleting of comments.

Dear Megan:

Two things about my deleted comment, which action was as obvious as it was ridiculous: first, I don't "hate" you. I'd have to care vastly more about you than I do in order to work up that level of emotion.

Second, I wasn't "inquiring" about anything, I was pointing out what a ridiculous and pathetic figure you have become in such a short period of time. I have no questions about the conclusion I have come to, because the evidence is right here on your blog.

So, to use your taxonomy, I was engaging in "observation" rather than "inquiry." And I would note that deleting observations that are critical of you is generally considered to be quite inappropriate on blogs that aspire to a level of seriousness somewhere above Pam Atlas. Given that you appear to have such aspirations, I would suggest to you, strongly, that you take a deep breath, apologize, and learn to keep your temper in check in the future. Or get another job. You choose.

This comment has been deleted for awesomeness pwnage. I mean trolling. Rampant Trolling.
