Where's the most reputable place to do a title search in DC?

A title search? You want to be Lady McArdle?

The real estate lawyer you (or whoever you're asking on behalf of) are using would ordinarily be the best source (and if you're thinking about buying property without a good lawyer, don't!).

Is there anyone lazier than McArdle?

A great question! I've used four different agencies and three had significant flaws (openly derisive of me taking time to read documents committing me to significant financial commitments, to cite one egregious example, and at another I had the gall to point out that they were over-charging for title insurance and demanding a reduction).
I would recommend staying away from those that act as paper-mills for the big real estate chains.

Is there anyone snippier than her new commenters?

Your local realtor can order up a title search for you online at no cost.

I have to say that since I'm not involved, I'd be more interested in knowing the most disreputable place to do a title search in DC.

I came here to find out what you think of the three guys who won Nobels in econ. Provide! Provide!

There are four major title insurance companies that control the vast majority of the market: Fidelity National, First American, LandAmerica and Stewart. There is also a very small firm called Investors Title that may or may not do business in DC.

The bottom line? Almost every title office you walk into will use one of these four (maybe five) companies, with very similar fees. The office will either be a branch of the company, or an agency that feeds into the company.

I would go with the one that has the best customer service.

What do you care? Unless you are paying cash, you will need a mortgage, which means you will need title insurance, which means it's Chicago Title's problem..

Megan,

Are you into water sports?

just asking

Oh, and yes, the 'good' one I didn't mention above is Press + Press 202.333.6600

Do you need something more than property records? If not, just use your local appraisal district's Web site, which I'm pretty sure is here: https://www.taxpayerservicecenter.com/RP_Search.jsp?search_type=Assessment

yugo,
You came to the wrong place. Check out marginalrevolution.com to see actual economists talking about the "Nobel" in Econ.

In my pants, sweetheart.

Sad. You ask a reasonable question and get responses from a bunch of morons.

Although I do not believe you can have a title in the United States, there is an English registry of titles that you can access on line by using Google. The easiest way to get a title though is not to go to a reputable place but to marry a reputable earl.

I sincerely hope this is helpful.

Same place you keep your brain and your personality, I see. Wow...everything fits in there! Must not be too crowded.
