Enough with "whiff of" accusations. Either there is enough there to make an actual, honest assertion (in this case, of sexism), or there is not. If one thinks so, they should make their best case. This sort of argument by innuendo, though irritatingly popular, is about as weak as it gets.
Sorry, I know this was not the point of the post. Just felt like a short rant.
That Hirshman, like Chait, get(s) any podium time, whatsoever, is a fine example of the ongoing debasement we are experiencing in the currency that is public discourse.
Man, I love Hirshman. It's great to see the mommybloggers get all riled up when someone suggests that it's not a conspiracy against them that leaves them unable to find a $70k/year, work-from-home job doing "meaningful" work despite not having worked for the past five years. If you have a problem with work/life balance, start by investigating your own partnership.
It's amazing how many self-described progressive women put up with such shitty husbands.

If you count Tim Russert as a member of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy(tm), then it's time to get your meds adjusted.
Some of us "mommybloggers" aren't pissed at her for not being able to find paid work for nothing. I accepted the loss of income and experience when I made the conscious decision to stay at home. I personally hate her because she thinks women are so stupid they can't make decisions like that for themselves and need to be somehow taught or guided toward having full-time work and government-paid daycare. I won't put my daughter in private daycare, so I sure as hell won't put her in government-run daycare run by government employees - nor do I want my family's tax dollars being used to pay for other people to make questionable (in terms of tax money only - I don't care if both parents work as long as they're not using my tax money to support themselves) housing/car/other decisions that don't allow them to live on one salary for a few years. I also think Hirschman completely glosses over the importance of educated parents raising children. I see nothing wrong with using day care if anyone feels it is right for them, but it is certainly not right for everyone as Hirschman says it is...
