Save early and often

06 Dec 2007 03:39 pm

Sorry about the light posting; a Firefox crash just ate a monster post on tax policy just seconds before it was finished. Talk amongst yourselves while I gather my strength for a second attack. Also, save your work.

Monsters are bad! Firefox was doing you a favor.

You actually post through your browser? Good god woman, type in word then copy and paste!

I hate when that happens. Seriously.

Like Jack said, try composing "monsters" in Word or something that you can save periodically. Leave placeholders for quotes.

So that's why you've been neglecting Srabulous...

Actually, this occurred to me recently as one of the problems with a shift to web-apps over local-apps. We've finally gotten to the point where, due to lots of auto-saving and undo's and caches and the like, it's pretty hard to lose your work in Office. Well, if you know anything about all those auto-saves and undos and the like.

But with all the significant work that gets done today in web-page forms, we've gotten back that potential for loss. If you clicked "Preview" on a comment or something at anytime, there's a chance it's in your history and cache, but if not, everything important lived only in the memory assigned to that particular instance of your browser.

Of course, Gmail has solved this problem, but 95% of all web apps are excruciatingly far behind Gmail.

It looks like the Atlantic is using MovableType and if they haven't moved to 4.1 they should because it has an autosave feature now. The feature has made the people in my office very happy.

I think, if you poked around with this, you may be pleasantly surprised..

The best thing about FireFox are all of the add-ons to add functionality into the product that doesn't normally exist.

One of the better ones backs up text boxes on regular intervals so that crashes don't cause hours (or minutes) of work to be lost.
