I can't find my copy of the Motorcycle Diaries. Does anyone know the last line?

You expect THIS crowd to quote Che?
MISS MCARDLE, PLEASE MOVE AWAY FROM D.C.
All this bipartisanship is going to your head!

I am not myself anymore
At least, I’m not the same inside.

"And they lived happily ever after."

Oh wait, wrong story.

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

That makes me mist up every time I think of it. Powerful stuff.

"Princess, look out the window, and welcome to Genovia."

Oh sorry, that was The Princess Diaries. I assume the movies are similar however.

No, but I know what Guevara's last words were:

"Do you know Who I am? Do you know what I'm worth"

No Breaker Morant was he.

Do you know Who I am? Do you know what I'm worth"

Apocryphal.

Occam's Beard

Apparently those weren't his last words, but what he said on his capture.

As long as we're quoting mass murderers, what are last words of Mein Kampf?

David Nieporent

And then there's

"Well, I'm back."

As I recall, it was "tanta injusticia" (so much injustice).

I'm not a fan of the film. I made this particularly clear when I wrote a response to an all-too-favorable review of the film (it's in Spanish and I haven't the time to translate it right now, but for all the hispanohablante readers out there, you'll see what I'm getting at):

Ever go to a library? That's where people go to do something called "research." Oh, that's right--you don't do that either.

As long as we're quoting mass murderers, what are last words of Mein Kampf?

I'm not a fan of el Che.

That being said, that's an absurd comparison, and one which dishonors the 12 million victims of the Holocaust.

Ever go to a library? That's where people go to do something called "research." Oh, that's right--you don't do that either.

When you're done telling her that, would you mind throwing a drinking fountain through a window and letting the rest of us out of here?

It wasn't a drinking fountain, Mr. Literate.

Geez, tough crowd.

And a cocky one too considering how often I read on here that Ms. McArdle should clearly read such-and-such or obviously has never heard of so-and-so when readers are obviously quoting figures they have never studied seriously from disciplines of which they have less than a deep understanding.

Just my opinion about us readers here...

Jolly Inquisition

Hi Megan, I think you should avoid exposing yourself to the leftist ideas. All your instincts appear to lean toward socialism. You are in danger of falling under spell of full-blown statism, or even left radicalism. That could hurt your career, or at least force you to abandon the faux-libertarian niche your blog currently occupies.
I am worried about you.

Jolly,

Megan McArdle, libertarian.
Except she supports higher taxation, believes the AGW myth, is a vegetarian by conscience, and isn't really upset by the thought of government health care, only how it's implemented.

Oh, and she has this thing about fat people...

She's made a 90% switch from her Jane Galt days, and I fully expect her to become yet another full-fledged liberal Democrat journalist in short order. If she isn't already.

"Mindles H. Dreck"

"...and that's how my partners and I managed to get drunk with power, practice marksmanship with human targets and yet somehow remain symbols of social justice. To top it all off, we created a special line of clothing and posters that would help other depraved and power-hungry maniacs locate useful idiots around the globe. We hope you've enjoyed this cinematic self-help production."

head in the sand

> believes the AGW myth...

Yes, yes, I'm glad that you're onto the global scientific conspiracy as well.

Aha!..now I know why you were asking this.

You're welcome. Google was my friend.

Occam's Beard

Freddie, the major difference between international socialist Guevara and national socialist Schicklgruber was that the latter had the opportunity and considerably better organization than the former, and therefore murdered on a much greater scale. Otherwise, their differences were...not so much. Two psychopathic mass murderers. Even Castro falls short of Guevara in blood lust.

NutellaonToast

My god, Occam, you are an ass. Genocide >> communism on the shitty things to do with your time scale. Yes, Guevara used violent tactics. He did systemically try to exterminate an ethnicity nor did he advocate the extermination of his opponents. He fought in a violent revolution. He's in mixed company on that one.

"Mindles H. Dreck"

Occam - results count, though.

I'm sure the guy harassing people over on Fulton and Liberty would be Charlie Manson if he could...he just lacks organization and opportunity!

That said, I don't think it *insults* holocaust victims to draw the analogy, informally or no. We really have to narrow our definition of legitimate offense in this country/culture.

If we're going to talk about trivialization, what about the whole goddamn Motorcycle Diaries film itself, which is basically trivializing the suffering of Che's victims? And this isn't a case where you can say, "oh, man, no, he had a sound *message*, man, it just got abused by people who didn't understand what he really meant.." NO. Che actively participated in the suffering of others and knew what resulted from his revolution.

Shame on you who kneel to the film. Shame on you who place your brow where Che stepped, yet reserve only your bodily waste for the dirt covering his victims.

NutellaonToast

Right, Che and Hitler are synonymous, and saying otherwise is analogous to pissing on the victim's of Che's graves. Sound reasoning, all around.

NutellaonToast: If you don't understand analogies or the possessive form, please, just don't use them.
