Prime Time for Oppo Dumps

31 Mar 2008 07:42 pm

{Jon Henke]

It's getting down to desperation crunch time in the Democratic primary, so the oppo researchers are unloading the good stuff press is really beginning to scrutinize the candidates more carefully. While the "oops" moments they've uncovered probably are not campaign-ending disasters, they seem like the kind of narrative slips that could be problematic for both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. A parade of the recent troubles...

Hillary Clinton is running on her competence and determination to insure everybody. But she hasn't paid her staff's medical bills in a couple months.

Barack Obama is running as a new kind of candidate with a new kind of campaign. But his campaign is spreading good old-fashioned, er, misinformation. Oddly, they seem to think that hey, he amended the document and signed it himself, but that doesn't mean he actually read the thing is a good defense. [NOTE: yes, staffers do fill out questionnaires, and it is entirely plausible that Obama didn't read it the first time. It's even plausible that he didn't really read it thoroughly the second time, though one wonders why he filed an amended version if he or his policy people hadn't checked it closely enough to detect errors. But it's pretty implausible that a questionnaire was filled out and sent without ever being checked by the policy people who knew his positions well.]

Hillary Clinton is running on her experience. But it turns out she might not be quite so eager to discuss some of that experience, such as the meeting she had with a fellow who was apparently, illegally lobbying for Saddam Hussein, and who says Hillary Clinton "passed a message to the State Department" about the need to implement the oil-for-food deal..."

Barack Obama is running as the sort of Uniter-Not-Divider politician who can bring us all together in rapturous harmony. But he keeps finding himself having to explain his choice in spiritual advisors and campaign committee members. The most recent story points out Obama's "connection to another racially divisive public figure—the stridently homophobic Rev. James T. Meeks", who was named by the Southern Poverty Law Center as one of the "10 leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement". Incidentally, James Meeks was also behind the Halloween "hell house" which "housed a few denizens of "hell," including a pedophile trolling the Internet for a young victim, a meditating Buddhist, and two mincing young men wearing body glitter who were supposed to be homosexuals." Considering how the Progressives reacted to Obama's association with Donnie McClurkin, I would imagine this won't make people happy.

Hillary Clinton is running on her experience. But she found herself on the wrong side of Factcheck.org after she inserted herself into more foreign hot spots than Where in the Hell is Matt, and it turned out her foreign policy experience didn't resemble the Red Baron so much as Baron Von Munchausen.

Barack Obama is running on his unwillingness to take money from oil companies. But he's also been factcheck.org'd, since it turns out that no candidate has taken money from oil companies, and Obama has "accepted more than $213,000 from individuals who work for companies in the oil and gas industry and their spouses."

Hillary Clinton is running on her competence. But she has had to back down from her claims about experiencing sniper fire in Bosnia, claiming she was merely "sleep-deprived" and had "misspoke". ("Tired" is the politician's equivalent of the "flu" excuse that movie stars use when they need to spend a bit of time in rehab; it's transparently false, but they seem to think people buy it) But she had been "repeating this whopper for nearly three months" and the "Bosnia anecdote was part of her prepared remarks, scripted and vetted with her staff."

She must have been very tired.

Imagine what she might do if - to pick a potential Presidential situation entirely at random - there is a phone in the White House and it's ringing because something is happening in the world. It's 3:00 a.m., and your children are safe and asleep. What do you suppose she might say if she was sleepy?

It's been a difficult week for both of them, but they have only themselves to blame. Well, themselves, their opponents research departments and a few well-fed reporters.

Obama is our Savior. Barak and Reverend Wright are Right, God D*** america. Now is the time to rally around Barak and Michelle and make them proud! No more so called elections where typical white people vote! And news flash america, Barak is right, your typical white american is a racist! Obama will apologize to our Muslim brothers for arrogant american policies of hate and slavery. Only Obama can forgive an evil nation founded on slavery. REPARATIONS NOW!

"It's been a difficult week for both of them, but they have only themselves to blame."

If this has been a 'difficult' week for Obama, I look forward to seeing what happens when he has a mediocre one. Have you seen the polls? Or heard the questions about whether Clinton should even be in the race?

2.5-3.5 weeks ago= bad week for Obama. This week?

Rev.James T. Meeks is a superdelegate and a Illinois Senetor. So Obama has to vet superdelegates and he is responsible for everyone now. So Clinton is responsible for Eliot Spitzer as well correct? You make me sick...the Black guy is now responsible for everyone that he ever met, worked with or even passed on the street. This is the real racism in America..GOD DAMN AMERICA.

Meeks is described in a 2004 Chicago Sun Times article as someone Barack Obama regularly seeks out for “spiritual counsel”. If this isn't true, presumably Obama asked for a correction from the Sun Times. If it is true, Obama should be asked why someone with such views was a worthy of giving "spiritual counsel", because, yes, you do have to vet your regular spiritual counselors. GOD DAMN KAREN. Facetiously, of course.

Maybe our author meant a difficult week for Obama in the eyes of anything with the ability to read and/or who has not knocked back a few litres of the Kool Aid. No love for Hillary here, in fact I feel like I'm in some sort of bizarre hell in facing the three likely candidates, but it takes an incredibly amount of infatuation with the many to completely deny when something looks bad. It's been my understanding after two Bush terms that the new standard of evidence for anything begins with, "Where there's smoke, there's fire."

Hey.. Clinton didn't get a free pass for Hsue, so it's not a race thing. Though I wonder why no one has investigated McCain's connections to the Communists in Vietnam...

Can people please just stop trying to act like accepting money from people who work in a certain industry means anything? Private donations are private donations. I work for a Wall Street firm, and when I give money to a candidate it's got nothing to do with who would or would not do anything to benefit Wall Street. You just have to list your employer and profession when you give money.

Speaking of disclosure, y'all might want to label who wrote this like you've been doing with the rest of the guest posts.

I don't believe it's the issue of who is giving money to Obama so much as who Obama has chosen to associate with. The articles from 2004 where Meeks and Obama speak of one another make it clear there's a fairly cozy relationship between the two, even though it may not be a central one, and it invites further critique.

Hilarious. Did you get all of this from a Republican press release? Or just 85%? I have one of their hit job emails in my hands--that I'm not going to read--but just by skimming it, I'd say it's well over 60% that you copied verbatim.

Just like Megan, you need to actually do some research--yourself. But I'm glad you're sticking with the tradition of this blog.

Blake's right.

Be of good cheer, comrade.

Speaking of disclosure, y'all might want to label who wrote this like you've been doing with the rest of the guest posts.
Thanks for the reminder. I've added it.

No, I didn't get any of it from a Republican outlet. In fact, one story was brought to my attention by a fellow who would consider himself a progressive. I linked in this post to anything I quoted.

If anything I wrote was inaccurate, you're welcome to point it out.

Karen,

Can I quote you in the ads I'm working on for McCain?

Would you call yourself a typical Democrat or a party activist?

Communists --> McCain
Beaters --> Beatee

Why do you ask?

Hey.. Clinton didn't get a free pass for Hsue, so it's not a race thing. Though I wonder why no one has investigated McCain's connections to the Communists in Vietnam...

That's because, dear boy, there's nothing to investigate. The only "connections" between the Communists and John McCain were regular interrogations and savage beatings imposed by the former upon the latter. Had John McCain "turned nose" on his fellow prisoners, we all would have known about it 34 years ago.

By the by, when did guys like you start worrying about "traitors" anyway? I thought concepts like treason were outmoded in the insular, post-modern, anti-imperialist worlds you inhabit.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Clinton is finished. It has been a terrible week for her. The final nail may have been the lies about Bosnia- such astonishing stupidity.

much ado about nothing.
Both these socialists are toast when the AWM&W of America enter the booth to brush away the liar OR the racist: take your choice.

Obama supports a racist anti-American and has for 20 years with his words, his presence and his check book ...

If you can't see that he ENDORSES Wrights message then you are beyond reason ...

I consider Obama an enabler of a racist anti-American ... (he's not robbing the bank, just driving the getaway car)

This is all a big con game ...
Obama claims to be a Moderate ...
Yet he clearly doesn't vote as a Moderate, didn't marry a Moderate and sends his children to a racist anti-American church ... not exactly the traits of a moderate man ...

"If anything I wrote was inaccurate, you're welcome to point it out."

Heh.

"But... but... REPUBLICAN!" says Blake. "How do you like THAT argument? You can't handle me and my righteous geniusnessity! Wait. Whaddya mean ad hominem? Who are you callin' ad hominem?"

Here's a partial Obama file. Given the cosmotarian nature of this site and the links, I'd imagine some of that isn't covered above.

Obama’s Bible Study Class

James Meeks – an Illinois state senator, pastor of one of the largest churches in the state and a declared Spiritual Adviser for Obama – came under fire for comments rebroadcast last week calling white American mayors "slave masters" and referring to black preachers and politicians who "protect" the "white man" as "house n-ggers."

"We don't have slave masters, we got mayors," Meeks said in an August 2006 sermon broadcast on a Chicago community television channel.
Aside from his senatorial duties, Meeks is an Illinois Superdelegate pledged to Obama and also presides over Salem Baptist Church, described as the largest church in Illinois.

In 2006, Meeks informed his church during a sermon he may run for Illinois governor. He was recorded telling the mostly black congregation any "white Christian" who doesn't vote for him is a "racist." Speaking from his pulpit Meeks said, “if I don't have every white Christian vote in the state of Illinois, I will stand on top of the Sears Tower and call every one of y'all racist."

Meeks is also notorious for his strong anti-homosexual platform, although Obama is campaigning for the "gay" vote. Meeks has routinely voted against pro-homosexual legislation and has been quoted during sermons referring to same-sex attraction "an evil sickness."

Obama told the Sun-Times that he is an attendee of Meeks' Salem Baptist Church for Wednesday night Bible Study.

According to Illinois State Board of Elections records, Rezko's businesses, Rezmar Corp. and Rezko Concession, contributed to Meeks' campaign funds.

A recent Meeks endorsement is touted on Obama’s campaign website.

James Meeks and his relationship with Obama was described in a 2004 Men's News Daily report during Obama's 2004 US Senate campaign:
Obama’s closest religious advisers -- Fr. (Michael) Pfleger, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ, and Illinois State Sen. James Meeks, who moonlights as the pastor of Chicago's Salem Baptist Church – may have quotes from Scripture always handy, but are theologically closer to Karl Marx and black nationalism, than to Christianity.
