Scamming the scammers

06 Mar 2008 06:35 pm

This turning of tables on a Nigerian scammer is pretty sweet. I laughed out loud repeatedly.

You do know that the magazine you currently blog for did a whole article about this, right?

So, did you laugh because it was "really" funny, or as part of a social bonding mechanism?

I actually found the story sad. Either one of the scammers has real talent, and is leading a life of crime instead of being able to make a living off of it, or else some poor friend/relative of the scammers went and got scammed out of hours of work. Not especially funny, in my view.

I can't feel too bad about somebody scamming a scammer. I mean, if he fell for his own game... sheesh.

Maybe it taught him a lesson. It would be a nicer (and more clever) way of doing it than running the poor guy through the criminal justice system (it's probably even worse in Cote d' Ivore than it is here in the good ole US of A).

I will say he did do a pretty decent job on that Commodore.

I was going mention The Atlantic's article from last year, but I see jeet beat me to it. Definitely worth a read--as are most Atlantic articles (and, no, I'm not a shill just a long-time subscriber).

Isn't reverse fraud still, legally, fraud?

The man does have a point. By the letter of the law, it probably is. But morally? I think of it more like if someone were to pick a fight with you, but you turn the tables on them and end up kicking their butt in self defense instead of getting pounded.. :)

In my mind, I'm picturing Nigerian newspaper article warning its readers about the American Couch Carving scam.

Isn't reverse fraud still, legally, fraud?

Sure. But does the law matter here? Let the scammer try to come to the states and prosecute.

It's also theft to take illegal drugs and not pay for them, but noone is going to prosecute that in a court of law.

1. Unless I missed something, the original scammer is not a Nigerian at all

2. You do realise where the name "Derek Trotter" originates, don't you ? (Clue: BBC Gold)

What about the pharmaceutical industry? Milking us out for a co-pay a day, with no mass options?
I was activated in the military, and got 2 bottles with a 90 day supply in each bottle, instead of now, in the civilian world, being milked out for a co-pay every month, with only a puny little 30 day supply, even though I know that I will need the stuff on a annual basis, or longer. Shouldn't I be able to get a mass-discount on mass quantities? Why are we being raped? When will the people stand up to this abuse??? Why isn't this an issue on the election campaigns? This is part of the issue that is driving up the costs of health care. Well, that and of course, malpractice insurance. It’s like paying more, for less. I wish that there was something that we, or our government could do to regulate or do something about this. These scammers deserve to be scammed.
