Now that's a debate I would have paid cash money to see.

"I would have paid cash money..."-MM

exactly, how did you intend on doing so??

Yeah, we long for the old serious and heroic men of yore, but even if we got them, our context has changed so much we'd never appreciate them.

Reminds me of the old observation that if Jesus actually did rise and come back amongst us, he'd probably just end up in a mental hospital by the end of the week.

We ought to stop longing for the glorious men of old, and recognize that it takes very different qualities to do good in our present than it did in the past, and start looking for new kinds of great man.

1) Lincoln did in fact respond to all kinds of crazy stuff, including long discussions of his homeliness.

2) Douglas wasn't a tool.

3) Does Publius believe that if only Stephanopolis and Clinton hadn't been such mean tools, Obama would have turned into Lincoln?

4) Is Publius's point that the Philadelphia debate doesn't conform in all respects with our cherished, but untrue, myths? That's a shocker.
