Food interlude

16 May 2008 09:17 am

Let's start of with a nice Friday morning post in which all of you make fun of me for being a hippie with bare feet and a bottle of chardonnay in one hand, a bunch of arugula in another.

For my three vegan readers, this was too useful, however, so I will just have to endure the no-doubt true charges of being excessively twee: a complete list of what's vegan at Trader Joe's. If you don't eat meat, and you don't read Vegan.com every day, you're doing yourself a disservice.

We now return to our regularly scheduled economic libertarianism.

Thanks for the info. It's good to know that apple juice, broccoli and spaghetti are meat & dairy free.

I'm not a Vegan or a vegetarian, but I regularly visit vegweb.org. Lots of really good and tasty recipes.

I believe we could solve global warming and world hunger if we would all just drink more damn chardonnay.

Megan, judging by your syntax, I assume you advocate meat-eating. According to you, not doing so is doing oneself a disservice. Funny thing for a vegan to say, no?

Damn hippies.

Entirely unrelated, but Brijit just announced it has run out of money and is closing up shop, at least for now but possibly for good: http://brijit.wordpress.com/2008/05/15/honk-if-you-love-brijit/

morzer,

Do you understand what the word "and" means? As in, "If you don't eat meat, and you don't read Vegan.com every day, you're doing yourself a disservice"?

I'm reasonably sure that you have more than three vegan readers who adore you. You can add me to your list, which would at least up your total to four. Thank you for the list.

BTW, you have seen the "What the Hell Does a Vegan Eat Anyway? blog, right? I find it deeply injurious to my attempts to stay on a diet but too tempting to avoid.

What happened to the critique of Elizabeth Warren? Last I remember you were only 14 minutes into her lecture. Where is myth #3? Have I missed something?

It's fine to post this stuff about veganism if you like. I don't understand why you would want to forgo meat (which is so tasty) but I don't care that much one way or the other.

I'm much more interested in Warren and her arguments concerning a supposedly collapsing middle class.

Sometimes I wonder if our whole modern moment of environmental concern (including our messianic vegan enthusiasms) is a fad that will disappear as the world is (or our lives are) eclipsed by more immediate difficult issues.

As for Brijit, that was obvious something would go wrong. How can you pay out $5/$8 for hundreds or thousands of article abtracts each week. That adds up and is one of those capture the ocean in a drinking cup exercises that takes massive amounts of funding. You have to abstract a LOT to make the site unique but that requires shoveling money out the door unmatched by immediate revenue.

It's only excessively twee if you drive to TJs in a Prius, with NPR on the radio.

"so I will just have to endure the no-doubt true charges of being excessively twee:"

I didn't think you were excessively twee until you used the word "twee".

That's how my 2 year old used to say tree...

From what I know, this list is actually not exhaustive. So if you do see something at Trader Joes that seems vegan but isn't on the list, it could very well still be vegan. They are always getting new vegan stuff, and it's not always reflected on the list.

At least, that's what I hear on vegan message boards. Fate seems to dictate that I won't live near a Trader Joes anytime soon. *sigh*

What, did Obama finally accept your dinner invitation?

Watch what vegans eat with Benjiamin Zephaniah. It's oldish but sweet.

This one is newish - I found it by following Megan's link. Mark Bittman Video: What’s Wrong with What We Eat

Quote from vegan.com: This is the kind of material I can send to my omnivorous friends without being called a preacher.

Actually - if you had send it only a few years ago...

Well, I am vegan but not a reader, so I'm not sure I qualify as one of the three.

However, that could very well change.

Thanks for the list, even though I'm nowhere near a TJs. The more info out there, etc. (BTW, spaghetti may not be vegan, if it contains eggs. Rare for that to happen in dried pasta, however.)

Benquo, the point morzer made is that Megan's syntax is ambiguous. Perhaps the subtleties of the word "and" escaped you? Complex stuff, I know, but worth thinking about, rather than the sort of hand-jerk reaction you offer.
