Apparently the lines have been forming at the New York Apple stores for "days" (or so one correspondent reports), but when I drove past the Clarendon Apple Store around one, there was no noticeable queuing--indeed, the store seemed pretty quiet. Nonetheless, Peter Suderman and I will be camping out in the line tonight, bringing you the latest in liveblogging from the Apple hype machine. I feel no desperate urge to get my hands on one of the VERY FIRST 3G IPHONES, but I can't resist a spectacle. Presuming there is one, that is. They don't call me "Miss Zeitgeist" for nothing . . .

Megan,
Methinks you and Peter Suderman need "significant others", or good books, or hobbies. Puhleeese!
Given the fact that Northern Virgina seems to be about the only place in the country with a saturation level of Apple stores, (Without looking at a map, I can think of Clarendon, Pentagon City, Tysons and Fair Lakes, plus whatever's in DC and Maryland) I wouldn't expect major lines.
On the other hand, the stores inside malls may not allow camping out, so maybe you'll have some luck.
You're in NYC and waiting for a cell phone? To be fair it is the cell phone. While I admit a good night out was catching Star Wars, or Two Towers for a midnight showing. I can't seem to make up the enthusiasm necessary for an Iphone.
thats what I get for browsing "Clarendon."
I'm not sure what's so exciting -- this is almost the same as the original iPhone from last year, except that it's faster on cell networks in some areas. Those of us interested enough to wait in line already waited in line, and have an iPhone already, and can wait a few days for faster data.
I can't imagine any real life product that I would stand in line for overnight.

Concert tickets?
Huddled yuppies, yearning to pay way too much for a telephone. I think I'll pass.
Perhaps you folks are too hard on Ms. Megan. The new iPhone has GPS, too.
I feel no desperate urge to get my hands on one of the VERY FIRST 3G IPHONES
I don't feel desperate to get my hands on one of the very first 3G Iphones, but I have a notion that, given the price reduction, they may sell out quickly, and I don't want to take my chances next week. So, it's up at 5:30 for me tomorrow morning. Does anyone think my fears are justified? A friend of a friend works at the shiny new Apple store in Boston, and it was reported to me that supplies should last through the weekend but all bet are off for Monday. I know the economy is weak, but this is a very significant price drop, and as far as I can tell, there's still no hand held that quite matches the IPhone's web-browsing capabilities. What I'm really desperate for -- for professional reasons -- is high quality web browsing in a very small device. I frankly could do without the music player and the lame camera.

You're leaving out the rather large number of people who were either too poor or too cheap for the first version.
