If James L. Harris really did what police say he did, then I would like to award him a Happy Mutant Criminal Award certificate. The 18-year-old is accused of stealing at least three Miami-Dade Transist buses, and driving them on their routes. Police say Harris wore a Miami-Dade Transit employee uniform, did not steal the fares, and returned the buses to the depot each night. He's been charged with three counts each of third-degree grand theft and burglary of an occupied conveyance.
Why are they charging this guy? It seems like they ought to hire him. If only so that he can get the therapy he needs through Miami-Dade's no-doubt generous benefits package.

There's a guy in NYC who's been commandeering subway trains since he was 15 years old in 1981. He's 43 now and was recently arrested for I think the 23rd time for impersonating a transit worker. I've never been sure why they didn't just give him a job, at the Subway Museum if nothing else, but it seems they thing it's more an issue of Asperger's-style obsession than an innocent hobby.
Then again, these days we'd probably decide the 9-year-old Picasso was autistic and had an unhealthy obsession with painting, and pump him full of Ritalin or something.
I bet he doesn't have a CDL.
I hope the charges are just leverage. The guy must have some sort of problem. If they plan to drop the charges if he gets treatment, that's reasonable. If he has an irrational need to drive a bus route, he could easily be a danger to himself and others.
If they're just being hardasses, that sucks.
They should fine him the union dues he would owe and then make him file paperwork for those fares and buses.
If only everyone would work for free, just think how much richer corporations could be.
Doesn't the offence of theft still require an intent to permanently deprive in Leftpondia, then?
It seems like they ought to hire him. If only so that he can get the therapy he needs through Miami-Dade's no-doubt generous benefits package.
And what benefits package do you get for working at The Atlantic?
If only everyone would work for free, just think how much richer corporations could be.
About zero. Nice rhyme though.
JKC,
She gets to put up with jackasses like us, though not many would call it a benefit.
His real crime was making the real employees look bad by comparison.
Eriver wins comment of the month.
No joke - how 'bout we extradite him to DC and see if he can get the 60 bus to show up at Fort Totten on time for the evening rush?
ty, ty.
