Romney no longer under consideration for VP spot?

James Poulos says Romney is out.  McCain/Jindal 2008?

Assuming McCain doesn't worry about exorcist jokes, it sounds like an interesting pick. Jindal would help McCain in lots of ways - he's young, he's not of European ancestry but he's shown he can win in a southern state, he insulates the Republicans against charges of racism, and he knows a lot about the economy. The only problem is that part of the McCain vote, a small part I hope, will go for him solely out of an uncomfortable feeling about voting for an African-American, and I think they'd find Jindal even more exotic than Obama.

I can tell you for a fact that Jindal is heavily engaged in hurricane prep right now. I cannot imagine him walking away from Louisianna in its potential time of need to go run for VP. He will be barbequed if he does. For that reason, I don't think it is Jindle.

Why would Jindal risk attaching himself to something that has a fair chance of failing?* As young as he is, this is far from his last chance. Even if McCain wins and wins again, Jindal might be a viable candidate for 6-7 more elections.

Also, nominating Jindal sort of takes away the "callow and inexperienced" criticism from McCain.

*The only losing running mate ever to be eventually elected president was FDR in 1920. John Tyler was also a losing running mate, but his presidency came because of untimely death. I believe he is the only losing running mate to be elected to VP though.

How often do you get the chance to be VP? And its not like losing crushes the rest of your career. When opportunity knocks, open the door and grab it by the balls.

I mean, I passed twice on McCain's offer last week, but I'm special.

I'm not seeing the massive blowout that Obama was supposed to generate. Its still a horse race, might as well get in there. I imagine it'd be worth the risk.

No, it doesn't crush you, but it hasn't seemed to have helped many people in the past either. Also, if McCain wins and proves to be an unpopular president...that definitely can crush a career. If Bush didn't have Cheney, but rather someone who still had ambitions of his own, I can't imagine he'd ever have a chance at the presidency.

If Bush didn't have Cheney, he wouldn't be able to change McCain's Depends twice a day.

And you guys aren't selling him on intrade for a quick ~40% profit ... why again?

Oh, right: because the claim is complete garbage.

1) Who are "you guys"?
2) Selling whom?
3) What do you mean selling at a 40% profit?

Two things struck me in recent days.

1) Meg Whitman was listed as one of folks McCain trusts the most for advice when he was asked that question at Saddleback.

2) Of all the supposed VP nominees who've been on the punditry circuit in recent days, the one I've NOT seen is Meg Whitman.

Stop stealing my shtick!

Lurker:

1) Megan McArdle and James Paulos
2) Selling the "Will Romney be the republican VP canditate?" contract on intrade.com. (Sorry, don't know how to link to the specific contract.) Basically, that means betting that he will not be VP. Right now, you can sell a romney contract at about 50 (40-60 margin). That means, you put up 5 dollars, and if he's not selected, you get 10 back.
3) I actually underestimated the profit. But even if you had to sell at 40 (meaning you put up six dollars) and have to pay the fee of 50 cents on each contract by waiting till it expires, you make a huge profit within a few weeks.

For each $6.50 you put up, you profit $3.50, which is over a 50% profit ... if you turn out to be right.

Does that answer your questions?

Person, thanks for clarifying.

I don't think the claim has to be garbage, though obviously caution is desirable for these things.

I expect the reason they haven't tried to do the Intrade thing is that they do not have accounts set up. Nonetheless, the people who do have accounts set up DO seem to be reacting, as the ask and bid prices each just dropped about 7 points in the span of a few minutes. We will probably see a further drop if this really is a credible denunciation.

Remember, this isn't some huge thing that everyone is plugged into where large sums of money change hands. There are at most a couple thousand dollars at stake here, and only a few hundred or thousand people in the world participating. There is no reason to expect all or even most insiders are participating in Intrade. Heck, maybe there are even restrictions placed by either Intrade itself, and/or the atlantic and culture11.

Without a doubt, its a Mccain Jindal ticket. Consider this a scoop for ya'll.

If McCain wants a pick who'll remind people of the Dumbya/Cheney era he'll nominate a 200 pound sack of cow shit and slap a cowboy hat on it. The base will love it.

It looks like Pawlenty will be the heavy favorite.

I really like Sarah Palin though. Should give the ticket some energy. She seems like one of those mythic frontier women who has the time to have 4 kids but also be the governor of Alaska and climb 20,000 foot peaks.

My first choice for McCain would be Palin. That's why I think it won't be her. Why do I think it wont be her?

I was for Rudy, and then Mitt, after Rudy tanked. My track record ain't good.

I'm pretty sure this was written by one of MLJ's imposters: MLJ himself couldn't have written anything this funny.

Here's another prediction since Megan's wrong about everything...The next vice president of the USA: Mitt Romney.

Its going to be mccain-jindal.........

Jindal has a piece today in the WSJ about his conservative creds in Louisiana. I am assuming this is a prelude to being veep. Oh, and he's pro-life.
