Winston the bulldog

To your right is Winston, the bulldog who lives next to my friend Rachel.

Bartleby looks wounded

And on the left is my very own Bartleby, a nine-month old Bullmastiff puppy. Bartleby is doing his very best "What? Me? On the couch? I have no idea what you're talking about" look.

Bartleby on the couch

Here, Bartleby continues his attempts to convince me that he was just sitting there, minding his own business, when this couch came out of nowhere and slid itself under his butt.

Scene: Washington, D.C., apartment of writer Megan M.

Megan: "Bartleby, get off the couch!"

Bartleby (in a singularly mild, firm voice): “I would prefer not to.”

A Bullmastiff in D.C.?
I think someone way start to comprehend the attractiveness of suburban living.

Megan McArdle

I had a bullmastiff for years in a 450 square foot apartment in New York.

For some reason people think big dogs need lots of space. They don't really. Especially once they grow-up. Big dogs sleep a lot. What they need is to be taken out regularly and exercised. My medium dog (who is only 35 lbs and 7 years old) gets hour long romps in one of the 3 parks near my house (2 of which have dog runs--with lots of other doggies to play with) which is a lot more exercise than my friend's dogs...who live on 3.5 acres in suburban New Hampshire get.

when she's not outside playing, she naps or demands attention, but the confines of the apartment don't really bother her.

If Megan had a Jack Russell Terrier, keeping it in a small urban setting would be cruel. A Bull Mastif? Eh, it's just going to try to nap on the sofa.

I think Bartleby is on his way to becoming the world's biggest tall female econoblogger's mascot.

I love dogs, too, but having a dog like that in an apartment makes me think of all the slobber and drool. From the dog, not me. =)

Actually not a big drooler, unlike my previous bullmastiff . . .

If Bartleby's nine months old now, I'm guessing you've got approximately five or six months to wrap all your personal belongings in plastic before the spigots open. ;)

Damned, sneaky couch! It never does this when Megan is watching!

ScentOfViolets

Hey, I know that look! We have three dogs . . . I'm not the discplinarian in the house, I let sleeping dogs lie. But when they hear Barb's car pulling into the driveway, there's a right smart movement off the couch. Which also happens to one of those brown leathery things, the problem of dog hair being what it is. Me, I don't mind, I grew up in the country. Barb is sissified; she grew up in one of those big towns that has almost 10,000 residents.

Come on, let Bartleby on the couch. How can you say no to a mug like that?

Dog blogging, is this what you've sunk to! Very attractive dog by the way.

But Megan, you're a girl.... You're supposed to have a cute, fluffy, little plush toy sized thing that you carry around in a handbag! I'm having difficulty processing this...

Actually the right breed of big dogs and their staggering ability for napping and mellowness make them a much better fit for limited areas then smaller breeds who are high energy / hyperactive.

Very nice looking dog by the way.
