Lipstick on a pit bull

04 Sep 2008 11:47 am

Laura McKenna explains better than I could why us coastal elites had better fear the soccer mom.

"Since the job is flexible and part time, she's probably under paid and taking orders from a man. "

Uh.....let me guess.....as the Governor of Alaska, she must be taking orders from.....oh, I don't know......Big Oil?

Give me a break, MM.

Lipstick on a Pit Bull is a terrible saying, what kind of sissy has a problem with beating a dog thats trying to bite?

It was a reference to a joke she made in the speech last night.

Q: What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull?

A: Lipstick.

Agreed, but...

A frequent problem for anyone who is significantly engaged in politics (certainly journalists, but also anyone with strong party affiliation) is that they forget how the world looks to those who don't deeply care about politics (which is most Americans).

In posts and comments, people refer to "Independents", as though they are people deeply committed to policy stances which are moderate. The truth is that "Independents" are simply people who don't align themselves with the parties. People who think "I'm gonna vote for the woman!" are "independents". So are people who think "I'm gonna vote for divided government", so are people who vote for the most charismatic or attractive candidate, so are people who vote for the candidate whose personality seems like theirs, etc. etc. etc.

You can't "go after Independents", because they aren't a uniform bloc with shared characteristics.

There are many "suburban soccer moms" out there. Many of them would have voted for Hillary, but many wouldn't. Freddie is right that very few people will decide to vote for McCain simply because they approve of or agree with Palin. However, the biggest thing she can do is get the huge swath of people who don't even listen to the news often or care what McCain stands for, to listen and pay attention.

Some of them will find stuff they disagree with or don't care about, and go back to paying attention to their real lives. But some of them will be excited by what they hear, and vote for McCain. Not because of his VP choice, but because his VP choice got their attention, and after that they liked what they saw. Or not.

Her lipstick/pitbull line was probably one of the most accurate statements she made last night. I played hockey when I was young and I can attest that hockey moms are undoubtedly a unique breed. Pitbulls with lipstick may not do them justice.

Ahh now I get it. I'm sorry though, it kind of makes me laugh, I don't think that woman could inspire fear at all. Matter of fact a pit bull is a small dog that typically latches on to extremities, its only notable trait being the lockjaw effect. Suffice to say to me this woman is Dorothy in the land of Oz. Ferraro at least was someone you could see sending someone down a dark New York alleyway with a surprise inside.

Oh and this version of Oz doesn't end with a bucket of water on an evil witch. This version ends with a hockey mom finding out real quick that people won't respect a thing she has done in her entire life. Her husband and children will be openly mocked, her PTA, down-home vibe, and adorable personality will be taken out of context, distorted, and exploited to make her seem like a rube from a small town who Putin would eat like Borscht (I think thats the spelling). Insults are cute, but John McCain KNOWS how to be a cynical bastard. Same goes for Obama and Biden, Hillary made a career out of it. This isn't legally blonde, win or lose this will not work out well for her in the long run.

Mountain Shout

Megan, I love your writing, and this blog. But, I hate when someone self-describes themselves as "elite". I know, it's small, and nit-picky, and you certainly don't advocate those ideas, and I'm not throwing this out there just to be critical (because I know the trolls love you) but I think you'll attract less if you don't identify with that crowd.

Is Sarah Palin really a hockey mom?? I want to see a photo of her at one of her kids hockey games, or evidence that any of her kids played organized hockey. Has she ever shot a moose, or even been out in the bush carrying a rifle in moose season? I haven't found any evidence that she is a moose-hunting hockey mom, only that she says so.

That was her best line of the night.

Soccer or hockey? I think there's a difference in political terms.

Sarah Palin = George W. Bush

My initial reaction to Sarah Palin is just like my initial reaction to George W. Bush. She makes me feel sick deep in my stomach. I truly hope our country isn't stupid enough to put Palin anywhere near the White House.
