Thought for the day

28 Oct 2008 12:14 pm

Considering that I'm going as a comic book graphic novel character for Halloween, you knew I was going to love this.  Now, if someone could only blend economics, comics, and cooking . . .

Update:  Readers request that I note that this contains Watchmen spoilers, since the movie is coming out in March.

Uh, how about a MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING on that link?

Ow, Megan. Careful. You know the movie is coming out in March, right? You need to warn people.

Movie looks great too - very much like the book.

Are you going to post Halloween images automatically, or do we have to say pretty please?

Half Canadian

Seeing as The Watchmen has been in print for over a decade, this is akin to giving away the plot of The Return of The King (the ring is destroyed, Gollum dies, all is well).

And Rhett Butler walks out on Scarlet O'Hara.

I was having a conversation about the musical Les Miserables once and I discussed the death of Eponine.

Someone nearby started yelling at me about "spoiling" it.

I tried to explain to them that the Musical came out in 1980 and the book came out around the time that Lincoln was president and, indeed, Eponine had died in both of those.

The bystander would hear none of it. I was spoiling the story for them by discussing a plot point from a book that came out around 140 years before the discussion in question.

Since this conversation, I have had less and less and less sympathy for people who hate spoilers. Maintenance of your Ignorance is not my responsibility.

Yeah, if the movie came out yesterday and you haven't seen it yet, sure. It'd be totally jerky to point out that the guy was one of the ghosts the kid saw. Sure.

But Watchmen came out in 1986-1987. It's also a best-seller that has had, what? more than a dozen? printings of its collected book.

All that to say: You People.

Except the ending seems to have been changed, so maybe it's not a spoiler at all.

I take it that the producers are going water down the central theme of the movie just like they did with “Wanted” and “V for Vendetta” for fear that the original subject matter may not be quite as appealing to a mass audience. Still both of those were enjoyable enough movies in their own right but not as good as the graphic novels.

I cannot tell a lie, my entire opinion of this movie is going to be determined by how Veidt delivers the most badadd villain line in comic book history:

"I did it thirty-five minutes ago"

:cut to Night owl with his jaw on the floor, cut to hell on earth:

What comic book character, by the way?

Megan McArdle

Delirium, from Sandman. And before you ask "Why not Death", because someone did that last year. Also, I get to spray-paint my hair and put on weird makeup and wear fishnet.

Shawn Levasseur

Megan, you had it right the first time with "Comic Book".

I don't mind the term "Graphic Novel", but not when it's used as a way to disassociate a work from the format as if it's some great shame to be a comic book.

Seeing as The Watchmen has been in print for over a decade, this is akin to giving away the plot of The Return of The King (the ring is destroyed, Gollum dies, all is well).

Ha. Apt comparison though. If you're really excited about the upcoming movie but somehow haven't read the comic, then you are a unique bird indeed.

Cool costume idea, Megan.

Bonus points if you bring a bunch of frogs out with you.

I'm going as Raul Duke. No luck yet convincing any of my lawyer friends to go as my attorney.

Are you going as Ozymandius or Doc Manhattan?

If you're going as the Doc, are you going as Doc with pants or Doc sans?

Jack,

No, no. The best line from the comic is:

Rorschach, "A pretty butterfly."

You know, if it's cold enough where you live, Doc Manhattan could be the easiest costume ever.

Draw the hydrogen symbol on your forehead, strip off and let the freezing cold take care of the coloring...

Kudos to JayBird

Regarding spoilers: do you guys understand how many more people see a reasonably successful movie than have read even a 20-year old bestselling book?

Yes, we're all very, very cool, and have lots of Watchmen cred, and the movie may be different than the book, but it doesn't hurt to give a heads-up to all those squares who haven't heard of the book but will see the movie, does it?

Yeah, I was hungover and doing some very light tidying up of my living room a couple Saturdays ago and the doorbell rang and I freaked out. Dude. Everyone I know was hungover and also doing some light tidying up.

Of course, it was the Christians. They told me about Jesus and about how he died on the cross.

So I kicked them out of my house because I was planning on reading the Bible someday and they totally wrecked it for me.

How about a television show?

You could discuss the economics of food and restaurant related regulations, laws, bans, and subsidies all while preparing food that is thematically consistent with the world of comics...
