Finally, someone has a kind thought for the journalists

17 Nov 2008 04:24 pm

Typepad is apparently offering a bailout package for journalists:  a free Typepad Pro account, and access to their ad network.  This is a brilliant way to buy talent on the cheap for them, and possibly reap rewards for years to come.  And yet, also a good deal for the journalist--one of those win-win voluntary exchanges that free market types are always nattering on about.  So if you're a print journalist in trouble (and who isn't--a local wag recently suggested that the New York Observer ought to change its name to "The Daily Layoff") it might be worth checking out.

if you're a print journalist in trouble...

You make them sound like broken typewriters.

I thought after Roe the number of journalists "in trouble" went way down.

What passes for talent in print journalists these days, pray tell.......could it be actually writing something that people are willing to pay for to read?

Judging by the number of newspaper layoffs, there's not much talent in those ranks.

Off topic: as a kindle aficionado, can you say if it works well with a headlamp for reading--not to disturb any nearby folks, that is?

Or, the nature of media is changing, as evidenced by the fact that you are here on this blog reading and leaving comments for free.

By the way, keep up the great work.

I love the "doing right has no end" aspect of the bailout. Is there any industry or endeavor in the U.S. NOT worth saving? Maybe big tobacco and the adult film industry, but pretty much anything else is worthy of the bailout. Definitely worth satirizing">http://acreofindependence.com/2008/11/17/if-you-bail-out-detroit-then-bail-out-part-1/>satirizing. . .

After porn, tobacco and gambling, the list of those not worth bailing out probably continues with the industries that have already been bailed out/subsidised. Sugar growing and ethanol from cerals are starters for that list.

Should we ask Megan to start a thread on economic activities which definitely should not be offered a bail out in this recession?

Based on the opinion that the economy is tanking because of a crisis in confidence wouldn't we all be served by letting journalism fail? If 'consumers' (I am still looking for those elusive non-consumers) were not privy to the massive amounts of information about the pending doom of western civilization would they not continue to spend with their trademark irrational exuberance? With all this negativity circulating through the minds of shopers it is no wonder retailers have slashed prices upwards of 60%. Bailing out journalism is the worst possible course of action the government can take. They only lead to more informed and confused spenders who cause waves in the growth trends of producers and retailers. Shame on you Megan for your conceited self-interested propagandizing. Your only possible goal can be to ruin Christmas for everyone.
