Atlantic Business!

22 Jan 2009 01:51 pm

So this is the project that I alluded to this morning:  Atlantic Business.  It is, as the name suggests, a new Atlantic website focused on business.  One of the main features is a group blog on which most of my Asymmetrical Information content will be appearing.  There are also special features, like the interview with Michael Lewis we've got up.  We've also got something that a lot of you (and me!) have been wanting for a while:  registered comments.  Eventually they'll be migrating over here, too, but for now, I hope commenters will stick with the new page.

It should be possible for your IT people to set it up so that the business page includes only the truncated version of your post, but this page includes the post in full length without the annoying click through. In fact, it's not just possible -- it's relatively easy.

We'll take that thoughtful and well-reasoned libertarian response to Glenn Greenwald any time now. Thanks in advance.

Are you eligible for TARP?

Can't they find a blogger who know something about business and economics? Wouldn't want to take you away from you recipe blogging.

I think the concept is cool, but I have some major issues with the page design:

* I would prefer to view the list of posts under the "Brave New World" header in a format similar to this blog. Is there a way to do this?

* The font used in the images is blurry, making the text hard to read.

* The graph is blurry too; it looks like something that I would make using gnuplot.

* The overall page design is also a way too busy for my liking. The amount of content is overwhelming, and to see everything I have to look at the left column, scroll all the way down with my mouse, scroll all the way up again, look at the middle column, scroll all the way down, etc etc. That's tedious and frustrating even for someone who has a 19" monitor with crisp resolution.

Just what I always needed--another password to forget.

Gotta agree with pretty much everything Staash wrote. Hopefully this will evolve a bit.

Joy,

Just use the same password for everything.

I can't find a "Subscribe to RSS News Feed" on the new site.

Additional suggestion: it would be nice to provide a link to a feedback form somewhere. Blog comments don't seem like the appropriate place for suggestions and complaints, and I'm sure you could do without us nitpickers mailing you directly.

I have a question about registered comments. How do we know that The Atlantic won't reveal the names and business affiliations of the people posting comments? My views here have not, always, been those of my employer.

In contrast, my views at Althouse and Balkin, which have registered comments, tend to be very apolitical. My employer will not be upset no matter what I say about the solicitor general's clothing. (I have a different screen name there, obviously.)

"Joy,

Just use the same password for everything."

This is what I like to call, a very bad piece of advice.

That's really exciting, Megan, I'm jazzed for you and I'll be sure to update my RSS feed. Congratulations.

If you opt in, we may use your email to contact you about special offers. But we want demographic information (which is disaggregated, no fear) to report to advertisers, not to tell your employer on you. I have never, in seven years, threatened anyone with making public their information, and I wouldn't sanction doing so now.

Yeah registered comments! Now you won't have to be bothered by dissent, er I mean... naughty words!

You're such a thinker, Megan!

I don't really care if you have a jump in the webpage versions of your posts, but please make sure the RSS feed continues to deliver the full content.

Obviously you don't use the same password for EVERYTHING. You use the same password for "Everything that doesn't really matter".

So what if someone can hack into your Atlantic, NYT, blogger, kittenoftheweek, hanggliding.com and playboy accounts. You don't have any money there right? They can't actually do any damage beyond temporary annoyance.

I hate registered comments.

Man, that new site is cluttered. Too much scrolling.

Well, it would be nice to see some investigative business reporting. It's been years since the federal government prosecuted businesses(this is where leads come from). I'm so tired of business writing pieces just fawning over CEO's.

Why is it always the most freedom-loving types who like registered comments so that they can suppress diss... I mean, discourage oppo... sorry, can't think of any use for registered comments that isn't simply to stop people telling you you're full of shit. Which you are.

And like, no offence, but wtf do you know about business? Nearly everything you write about commerce, even obliquely, is wrong, and you're generally no better informed than any other person who doesn't actually do business, or do genuine work for a living.
