Don't eat the floosy pudding. Remain one of us.
Never been there myself. Of course the steaks are supposed to be first rate. What's that? OK, maybe not, then... ;->
The Old Market area of Omaha is the most eclectic part of the city and I think may surprise you to the upside...though Greenwich Village it is not. Here's link to the place.

The Old Market is probably the best area of town. The Old Spaghetti Factory is great if you want to eat until you drop. The Jones Street Brewery was decent the last time I was there. There are also several decent bistro-style places in the area.
Apparently the Jones Street Brewery may be long gone... but the Upstream Brewery is what I was thinking of...
Food: Brother Sebastian's, Johnny's Cafe, Lo Sole Mio, M's Pub, Pasta Amore
Drink: Billy Frog's, Brazen Head, Dubliner, Dundee Dell, Mr. Toad's, Upstream Brewery
If you only make it to one of those places, make sure it is the Dundee Dell. They have the largest collection of Single Malt Scotch in the country.

Ooooh, you said the magic words!
Makes me wonder which were the magic words.
Sure, sure, most folk would guess "single malt scotch" but I'm going with "Frog's Brazen Head". It sounds more magical to me, in an alchemical kind of way...
Damn, Matthew! I figured the list would be decent, but good GOD! I wonder how many places in the world have as good a selection as that.
Megan, there's a bar in Baltimore (Fells Point) that has a really great selection of scotch - Birds of a Feather. And the prices are good too. It's a lot less impressive than this place in Omaha though.
I spent a month in Omaha one day.
Old Market is good since you can walk the whole thing, otherwise be prepared for a monster dose of midwestern suburban sprawl. Omaha goes on forever.
Italiany= Nicola's Nice vibe, decent bar, ok food
New American= Flat Iron Interesting room and they try real hard.
Ted and Wally's Ice Cream Kitschy vibe, good ice cream sodas
La Buvette French Bistro, great Moules blanc, good wine selection, a little too hip, which in Omaha is kinda weird.
M's Pub Been there forever, they've got it dialed in.
Dubliner Good Irish bar, below street level, warm brick feeling, often has live music.
There's a neat perk of the job, Megan.
While you're there, why not try Buffett's alleged favorite steak place (Gorat's?).
Also, if you get a chance to ask a question, why not hit him with a hard one, like why Buffett didn't uses his 20% ownership stake in Moody's to try to stop them from slapping triple-A ratings on sub prime mortgage CDOs during the credit bubble.
And don't miss your chance at cow tipping.
Matthew's totally got you covered. If you're only going to be here a day or two stick with the downtown/Old Market area. Feel free to just ask random strangers here for eating/entertainment suggestion's too. Omahans are about as open and polite as they come and they love out of towners. If you're still here Friday or later the Cinco de Mayo celebration will be going from the 1st - 3rd in South Omaha and it's usually OK.
Also, keep an eye out for Clooney. The local news says was in town filming at the airport today.
Just remembered, but McFoster's Cafe is the only vegetarian restaurant in town. I've never eaten there, but I'm told it's very good and they're local and organic as much as is possible. You should have vegan options at most of the better restaurants, but if you want a decent variety of non-Asian/Italian choices I'm given to understand that McFoster's is the place to go.
I ate at the Dell when I was in Omaha earlier this spring. The bartender told me it is certified to have the largest collection of single malts in the country (North America? world? I don't remember).
Won't do Megan and good, but they had great fish and chips, too.
Megan - be sure to check out the duplicate bridge demonstration! I've played bridge against Warren B and Bill G many a time. Their teammate & partner, Bob Hamman - the best in the world - will be showing off his stuff there.
OK, I don't write often, but this is serious. Do NOT eat at Gorat's, which is supposed to be legendary as Buffet's favorite steak joint. He may be a financial genius, but he apparently doesn't know dining. The place is full of blue-hairs (I'm 49 and I thought they might offer me the kids' menu), and the food ranges from the low side of mediocre (the intriguing-sounding fried parsley) to god-awful (shrimp cocktail, steak). You could get a better steak and a more vibrant atmosphere at any steak chain off the interstate.
The Twisted Fork in the old market area is excellent. Very good food (try the fried pickles; best I've ever had) and a nice hip-without-trying-too-hard atmosphere.
I hope you'll report back to us.
